Argentina's Security Ministry Files Lawsuit Against Union Leader

The Ministry of National Security, through its lawyer Fernando Soto, has filed a criminal complaint against the general secretary of the State Workers' Association, Rodolfo Aguiar, for 'attacking the constitutional order and democratic life'. Argentine News Agency (NA) had access to the document presented by Soto, which confirmed that the complaint was initiated 'by express order' of Minister Patricia Bullrich. Soto argues that the union leader committed a 'crime' by 'threatening' the constitutional order, as provided for in articles 226 and 226 bis of the Criminal Code. In his complaint, Soto quotes Aguiar as saying: 'I want to say this with total sincerity... My work, our work, is to provoke the crisis of this government'. According to Soto, these public statements, made by a person responsible for representing state workers, are 'highly reprehensible' because he is deliberately urging to 'put the government in crisis', that is, to affect the exercise of the popular mandate held by the President of the Nation in developing his democratic faculties to present a bill to the National Congress. Soto also considered it 'plausible' to file this criminal complaint for the possible commission of the crime of 'public and sufficient threat', aimed at undermining the government of Javier Milei and 'hindering the free exercise of his constitutional powers'.
